Specialty Courses

  • Duration: 1-5 daysDurban Dancing Shrimp
  • Min. age: 10 years3700 THB
  • Max depth: 40m
  • Certification: PADI or SSI

There are many types of specialty courses available, listed below are some of the most popular: deep, enriched air nitrox and wreck.  There are many other specialty courses so dont be afraid to contact us if there is a specific one you would like to enquire about.

Deep Specialty CoursePuffer Fish

  • Duration: 2 days6000 THB
  • Min. age: 15 years
  • Max depth: 40
  • Certification: PADI or SSI

When thirty meters is not enough the deep specialty brings you to forty. Why go so deep? Some people enjoy the additional planning needed for deeper dives; others are interested in getting a glimpse of creatures that only live deeper down and ship wreck enthusiasts will be glad to hear that wrecks that lie deeper are often in a better condition than shallower wrecks.

ScorpianfishThe course varies slightlydepending on whether you do it with PADI or SSI. The main skills covered include - using decompression devices to plan deep dives, measuring light, colour and pressure changes and learning how to prevent decompression sickness and nitrogen narcosis. Both the PADI and SSI courses are 2 day courses with 4 deep dives.

Consists of: - Academic sessions - Study - 4 dives

Requirements: - Adventure diver certification or equivalent - Medically fit (click here for medical form)

Enriched Air Nitrox SpecialtyNitrox

  • Duration: 1 day8000 THB
  • Min. age: 15 years
  • Max Depth: 18-30m
  • Certification: PADI or SSI

What is Enriched Air Nitrox? Normal air is roughly 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen and is used when you first dive. Enriched Air Nitrox, “EANx” or “nitrox” is any air that has more than 21% oxygen. You learn on the open water course that breathing air under pressure affects you both mentally
and physically, you learn how to calculate the safe limits and dive within them.

NitroxChanging the percentage of the gas you breathe(using nitrox) changes these limits allowing extended no decompression limits and longer bottom times at certain depths. If you decide to stick to the same limits as normal air while using nitrox the benefit is a reduced nitrogen build up in your body over consecutive dives. This is beneficial if you plan to do many dives over many days.

Consists of: - Academics - Study - 2 dives optional

Requirements: - Open water certification or equivalent - Can be done as part of the open water course - Medicaly fit (click here for medical form)

Wreck Specialty CourseHTMS-Sattakut

  • Duration: 2 days5500 THB
  • Min. age: 15 years
  • Max depth: 30m
  • Certification:  PADI or SSI

Descending on a wreck for the first time can be quite eerie especially if it is an old vessel, even recent wrecks have certain ghostliness as they lie silent on the bottom. For some reason people are drawn to them. Some oldwrecks are very well preserved whereas others are completely broken up, some are historic graves and others archeological sites. Some have been purposely sank (scuttled) as artificial reefs for marine animals to live on and for divers to enjoy.

The wreck specialty course varies depending on which agency you choose to do the course with PADI or SSI. The basics learned on either include how to dive safely on a wreck avoiding potential hazards, how to recognize points of interest pre-dive, how to navigate and how to enjoy the experience while causing minimal impact.  With PADI the course is a 2 day 4 dive course. If the weather permits and you feel up for it you can penetrate the wreck under close instructor supervision on the final dive. PADI allows the course training to be combined with the dives from the nitrox specialty but from no other specialty course.

Nitrox DiveWith SSI the course is shorter and can be completed in one day (2 dives) although you may not penetrate the wreck it can be combined with other specialties such as deep, this can be convenient if you are pushed for time. For combined courses click here.  Please be aware, Koh Tao only has one wreck that is available to most divers and under some circumstances it cannot be visited. This may affect how long the course takes.

Consists of: - Academic - Study - 2-4 dives agency dependent.

Requirements: - Adventure diver - Adventure deep (Koh Tao's wreck is deeper then 18m) - Medicaly fit (click here for medical form)

PADI - The Professional Association of Dive InstructorsPADI or the Professional Association of Dive Instructor is the most well-known scuba diving training agency on the planet, to such an extent that people often ask to do the “PADI” course when referring to any scuba diving course.  Founded in 1966 they have more than forty years’ experience serving scuba divers and have over six thousand dive shops locate around the globe.

PADI run all types of courses, from kid’s courses conducted in a swimming pool to beginner, advanced, rescue and master right through to scuba instructor level and beyond.  PADI has a few instructor development centres about the Island and some dive centres are recognised PADI 5 star resorts and offer only PADI courses while others offer certification through various other agencies.

Seal TeamAs a member of the WRSTC (World Recreational Scuba Training Council), PADI recognises certifications from other training agencies such as SSI, BSAC, CMAS and NAUI amongst others.  The above agencies are represented on Koh Tao but not all agencies are so it is a good idea to check before arriving if you hold a certification from another. Certification equivalent tables are displayed on some agencies websites if you are in doubt.

All PADI materials come in a range of languages. Though paper manuals are still common most centres are going down the digital route and offering online manuals for keeping and a “library” copy of the paper manual while doing the course. PADI also offers e-learning, this allows you to complete the academic sessions of the course including exams online before coming and doing the practical “water work” when PADIyou get here. For more information about online training please contact kohtao.asia.

PADI is a patron of the “Project Aware Foundation” environmental organisation and puts a lot of time and effort into creating awareness about the harm being done to the oceans through climate change, over fishing and shark finning.  They also support marine conservation projects such as reef and beach clean ups.  PADI are also long term associates of the National Geographic Society and offer marine conservation courses in conjunction with both them and the Project Aware Foundation.

The PADI Project Awarewebsite offers information on all available PADI courses.  It has a shop locator, an online scuba community forum, dive holiday package deals and equipment sales.  If you go as far as professional level you then get further access to the site offering the ability to conduct diver certification checks and access to training materials and updates.  Wherever you decide to dive in the world there is always sure to be a PADI dive centre or PADI professional close by.
